the year has only begun; what i call good news?

With christmas and end of the year just around the corner, I must say the year has only begun for me. I have been experiencing the very best in the free software community space. Some highlights include the following:

highvoltage managed to hook me up to his generous friend JohannesLeRoux a.k.a Dade, thereby giving me authority to his server :)
hats off to highvoltage as he once again became my hero for hosting my site on his server(an american one for that matter)
one of the best...the CLUG(Cape Linux User Group) has invited/encouraged me to visit Kaapstad. I have been offered the CLUG Avatar. Visit http://wiki.clug.org.za to find out more of this kool idea.
its been nice to work on my new site again, expect launch soon around xmas or so
Kolab has hit 2.2 beta2 and beta3 releasing anytime this week is something open source community always have much anticipation for, especially with horde improving
OMG oh yeah, last week i was blessed again to notice the power behind open source migrations. Yes, power and I'm talking about Toltec Migration Tool , sense of purity born and bred in South Africa - Easy step-by-step migration of your mail, calendars, contacts, tasks, other groupware data and global address list (GAL) from a Microsoft Exchange server to a Kolab server. I was even more luckier to witness it happening from the eloquent hand of Joon Radley himself.

for me all systems ready for the festive with a lot of work :D how about you?

And so saturday saw me and my friends running for Pretoria to one of the main events about Software Freedom Day in the country.

It was all good and educational too. Lots of people came, but I must say most of them where either well informed geeks or those who've been to the event before. I was hoping to see more people who want to know more about FOSS etc.

However, it was all great as Eric and I distributed Ubuntu cd's, The OpenCD Project cd's, GEEK t-shirts(courtesy of Babelgeek), Go-OpenSource pens and caps. We shared to the best of our knowledge information about FOSS projects like Ubuntu and Kolab in particular. I'm sure over 300 cd's were handed out...:)

I also noticed there were people from as far as Central Africa, the DRC(Democratic Republic of Congo) and my friends one from Mozambique and one from Nelspruit. School children were also there to learn how FOSS can empower them.

It was hectic. Although I was at the Impi Linux stand, I was able to go meet Friedel and Dwayne at Translate.org.za. Myself and this guys have been translating and spreading the gospel of 11 South African languages on our software for a year or so but have never met in person until this day. It was nice to introduce my friends and other people to the project and I managed to make a few translations of the TuxPaint in Sesotho ... There were other people who wanted to take part in translations, notably Sindisiwe (proudly code-named BSB). BSB hope to see you a lot in translations and we are there to guide anytime :)

Met with the Joomla South African guys as well not to forget. I hope to get myself into that space of FOSS soon as well.

The most interesting thing about our SFD this year was that Microsoft also had a stand. Well i dont have details of what they were showing people but they were there and welcomed :)

eish there was a lot happening and I was always on my feet and it feels great to actually bring people closer to their freedom.

reaffirming software freedom

The onus is on us this saturday at the Software Freedom Day, held by the the Department of Science and Technology in Pretoria.

As for me I'll be doing South Sotho Translations with Translate and other guys and gals I've invited. Some of the guys I've invited for translations come all the way from Nelspruit. Today my invitations totalled 78 with 14 people positive to make it for the event :). If you like FOSS to speak your language come join us or meantime if you have any questions about translations email me or visit Translate website.

I'll also be seen proudly wearing my favorite Kolab t-shirt, the free software to the bone Collaboration suite.

Not forgetting what I love most about an event like this, is meeting FOSS Celebrities :) including the likes of:

Friedel & Dwayne Bailey - masterminds behind the award winning Translate.org.za
Jonathan Carter - High Voltage :)

Meeting the better site of grouware server and client has never been so lekker (i.e. Tsotsitaal for nice). For me this week my happiness came when I received the Kolab t-shirts all the way from Osnabruck, Germany :). The t-shirts were a courtesy of Intevation, the very same guys whom I know to be "Free Software to the bone" as Till Adam would say.

My Birthday Prayer

29 June is my 22nd Birthday and so I prayed:

Almighty God I pray for all people to go easy on politics because they could make one go maal indeed. I pray for Gordon Brown the British prime minister i heard about. I pray for our president and his opponents. I pray that you give Bill Gates and Microsoft wisdom of how to come to the party, instead of using this way ofbuying the open source community out, may they join us.

I pray for Charles Majola my friend to show his face on facebook. I pray for my Sotho Translations team in Translate.org.za and Launchpad, may it see success this month. I pray for my friends in Nelspruit, may Sentech put another tower for them to be able to see me here.

I pray for Lorraines sister, I know she will see the light one day. I pray for for the best yet to come for me and all assistance I get from the Germans, stephan and my boss. I pray for traffic in joburg, may it be like Bloemfontein one day.

Hmm, this morning I got cool news in my mail.

The status of your membership in the team Ubuntu Desktop Bugs (desktop-bugs) was changed by Daniel Holbach (dholbach) from Proposed to Approved.

I'm well on my way to becoming an Ubuntero, not that I'll be blogging like one of those weird guys. I've been accepted to the desktop-bugs team in Launchpad. This could be a good start towards greater participation in making the Ubuntu desktop the best, especially when it comes to South Sotho Translations of which I started a team with a few members.

I'm sure Highvoltage will be very glad to hear this :-)

My birthday is also around the corner on the 29th and I'll be adding this to my celebrations list :D

Reaffirm Africa!

I am an African

All this I know and know to be true because I am an African!

As an African, this is an achievement of which I am proud, proud without reservation and proud without any feeling of conceit.

Today it feels good to be an African.

25 May is Africa Day, during which all who call themselves Africans should remember to always act upon multiply the spirit of Africa to the world. Today we live in a world where images and ideas travel thousands of miles in a few seconds and one should definitely take advantage of advances presented to mother africa.

I'm surely going to enjoy celebrating Africa Day!

Another win for South African languages

Yet another problem facing modern technologies has always been Localisation of computer programs. However this was not the case as accessing a number of applications like email and websites in the native languages has undergone a big step. The Rhodes University's Horde email system was being translated into isiXhosa in a successful 48-hour Translate@thon last week friday during which an attempt was made to translate 10 000 words of the system. All thanks goes to people like Translate.org.za for their efforts in the uplifting process of our native languages.

I'm sure it would be very nice to see such wonderful events expanding to the rest of the country soon. I'm looking forward to see myself attend many Translate@thon's next time. :)
